Life Insurance

Life insurance may be an excellent way to fund your donation without diluting your estate or depriving your loved ones. At the end of the donor’s lifetime, the insurance proceeds are paid directly to the Louis Brier Jewish Aged Foundation as the beneficiary of the policy.

Plans can be funded from new or existing policies. A tax receipt is issued by the Foundation for the amount of the premiums paid each year. Alternately, the plan can be set up so that a receipt is issued for the total insurance proceeds when paid.

Annuity

A charitable gift annuity allows a donor to give cash to a charity and in return receive periodic income in the form of an annuity. The amount of the periodic payment depends upon the amount gifted and the age of the donor. Couples can purchase joint and last survivor annuities that will continue the periodic payments until the last spouse dies.

The Foundation is precluded from arranging an annuity, so this form of gift would be arranged through the Louis Brier Home & Hospital.

Charitable Remainder Trust

You can create an irrevocable trust funded by assets such as cash or securities and receive a receipt for income tax purposes that may be put to immediate use.

You or a designated beneficiary would receive the income earned from the trust, either for life or a specified period of years. When the trust terminates, the balance of the principal and the remainder interest will pass to the Foundation.

Establishing a Family Endowment Fund

In an effort to continue funding the essential needs of the Louis Brier Home & Hospital, a Family Endowment Fund is available as a perpetual reminder to the community of a family‘s commitment to excellence at the Louis Brier. A family fund can honour a member or loved one and will live on for generations providing much needed income to the Foundation on a regular basis.

The minimum level of commitment is $10,000 with $2,000 upon enrolment and the balance payable at $1,000 per year.

Giving to the Chai Endowment Fund or the Golden Key Endowment Fund

An endowment is a capital gift held by the Foundation in perpetuity and invested to provide a steady source of income. The Chai Endowment Fund was established in 2005 as a long-term strategy to provide financial assistance to the Louis Brier residents for their programs and services. Similarly, the Golden Key Endowment Fund was established in 2003, to assist those living in the Weinberg Residence, who otherwise would be unable to afford the cost of the residence. Both endowment funds have a goal of $10 million dollars.

A gift to either fund provides a dependable source of funding for today and tomorrow. You can contribute to these endowment funds with the Louis Brier Jewish Aged Foundation during your lifetime and receive tax benefits for donations made.

There is no minimum level of participation for this fund.

Gift in Kind

A gift in kind includes tangible property other than cash, such as real estate, vehicle, jewellery or works of art.

Items are appraised and a tax receipt is issued by the Louis Brier Jewish Aged Foundation. In some cases you may be able to continue to have the use of property for the rest of your life.

RRSP/RRIF

Your RRSP or RRIF funds can name the Louis Brier Jewish Aged Foundation as the beneficiary. The Foundation will receive the plan proceeds and a donation receipt will be issued to your estate eliminating tax on the RRSP or RRIF.
