NUTRITION AND FOOD SERVICES

Traditional, well-balanced meals and between meal snacks are provided daily, utilizing a six week menu planned by a Registered Dietitian. A food committee meeting is held monthly where residents are invited to give feedback on the meals, submit their own recipes and help plan special events. Special food service events include holiday meals, theme days and summer barbeques.

Meal delivery varies from area to area. Table service is provided in the Intermediate Care dining room and tray service is provided for residents in Extended Care and Special Care Unit. The Extended Care dining room is open for lunch and dinner for a small group of residents. The interdisciplinary team has established criteria for use of the extended care dining room, including the ability to manage a meal with minimal assistance.

Guests

Meals can be a social time to connect with others so we welcome family members and friends to join a resident at mealtime. Visitors may choose to purchase a meal ticket from the Receptionist (current regular meal prices vary from $7.50 to $12.00 depending on the meal purchased), or to simply visit without eating – according to their preference. With the purchase of a meal ticket a visitor is entitled to the complete meal as served to Louis Brier residents. A guest who does not wish to eat will be offered a cup of tea or coffee free of charge. Items are not available for purchase on an a la cart basis.

The Food Services department appreciates receiving advance notice when a guest will join a resident for a meal. Whenever possible we try to arrange for seating that allows residents and guests to have ample space to comfortably enjoy their meals. It may not be possible to accommodate larger parties (greater that 2-3 guests per resident).

Nutrition Counseling

Our Clinical Dietitians provide counseling with respect to dietary needs. Resident likes and dislikes are respected. Modified and therapeutic diets are served as required. Several texture modifications allow those with chewing and swallowing problems to continue to enjoy their favorite foods. The goal is to maintain quality of life and promote good nutritional health through foods that are appealing and appropriate to the individual’s needs.

Kashruth

The Louis Brier operates its kitchen and serves food in accordance with the laws of kashruth, (Jewish dietary laws). There is a Mashgiach on staff.

No dishes or cutlery may be removed from the Dining Room areas. No foods may be brought by a resident or family member into the Dining Room. Residents may enjoy food brought from outside the facility in their own rooms. Louis Brier dishes or cutlery cannot be used for food brought from the outside.
